Five days dedicated to the discovery of Eastern Sicily, to see not only the most famous tourist resorts, but also less known corners

1° day CALTAGIRONE

The tour will start in Caltagirone, "the city of ceramics" (Unesco site). Since ancient times the locality was chosen for its privileged position that being on the watershed that divides the two largest plains of Sicily, the Piana di Gela and the Piana di Catania, allowed it to control and defend a vast territory. Thanks to the presence of clay quarries in the area, over the centuries the city has specialized in the production of ceramics, still today the main economic resource of the city. Visit of the historical centre.

In the evening transfer to the hotel, Catania or Taormina area.

Dinner and overnight.

2°  day ETNA TAORMINA

After breakfast departure to mount  Etna (UNESCO site), the highest active volcano in Europe. Along the roads that cut the lava flows occurred in the years, the youngest on the earlier one,  immersed in the typical landscapes of the volcano, we arrive at Rifugio Sapienza (mt.1920). Here you can take a walk through the Silvestri craters and the lava flows of 2001 and 2002 or continue with the cable car and the off-road vehicles up to a height of  about 2,900 mt. (optional excursion to be paid on the spot, about € 63). After lunch we will continue to Taormina, surely the most famous tourist resort of Sicily, founded by the Greeks on the southern slopes of the Peloritani mountains, offers breathtaking views of the sea and the volcano. Walking tour of the city and visit of the ancient theater. Free time. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight .

3° day SIRACUSA

Syracuse (Unesco World Heritage), the most beautiful and largest Greek colony in Sicily. Visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis with the Greek Theater, the Roman Amphitheater, the Ear of Dionysius (from acoustics producing extraordinary effects). and the Latomie. Then we will proceed with the catacombs of the Capuchins and the sanctuary of the Madonna della lacrime. After lunch walking tour of Ortigia, a small island on which the first Greek colony was founded, today  historic centre of Syracuse. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

 

4° day MESSINA SAVOCA - FORZA D'AGRO'

After breakfast departure for Messina, "the city of the strait". Founded by the Greeks in the north-eastern corner of Sicily, the city was many times destroyed by earthquakes and it was always rebuilt in the same place, to underline its importance as a connecting point between the island and the continent. Lunch and continuation for Savoca and Forza d'Agrò, two small and charming medieval centres, perched on the Peloritani mountains, famous because the movie-director Francis Ford Coppola chose them as the location for the film "The Godfather". Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

5° day CATANIA AND DEPARTURE

After breakfast transfer to Catania, the second city of Sicily, founded by the Greeks in the shadow of Mount Etna. Although it preserves numerous archaeological remains, today it is famous for its black and white buildings built after the devastating earthquake that in 1693 destroyed the city to its foundations. Visit of  the historic city center (World Heritage Site) and of its famous fish market. After lunch transfer to the airport, end of our services.
